New York Sportsbooks Generate $214.4M in July Revenue

New York’s online sportsbooks reported $214.4 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in July, despite a decline in betting volume from the previous month.
According to data released by the New York State Gaming Commission, the state’s eight licensed operators accepted $1.88 billion in wagers, converting an 11.4% hold into one of the strongest monthly revenue performances of the year.
The figures underscore a fundamental dynamic in sports betting economics: operator profitability is driven not only by wagering volume but also by hold percentage. While July handle retreated from June’s record levels, a significantly stronger win rate more than offset the decline, resulting in a substantial increase in revenue.
Revenue Climbs as Operator Margins Recover
After setting an all-time monthly handle record of $2.25 billion in June, New York’s betting market cooled in July, with total wagers declining 16.7% month over month.Revenue, however, moved in the opposite direction.
Gross gaming revenue surged 83.5% from $116.8 million in June to $214.4 million, reflecting the sharp recovery in sportsbook margins. Operators retained 11.4% of wagers during July, compared with just 5.19% a month earlier.
The contrast illustrates how monthly revenue can fluctuate independently of betting activity, particularly when customer-friendly results compress operator hold during one period before normalising in the next.
Growth Remains Strong Year Over Year
Despite the monthly slowdown, New York’s sports betting market continued to expand on an annual basis.Total wagering volume increased 34.3% compared with July 2025, while gross gaming revenue rose 37.8%, indicating that both customer activity and operator earnings remain on a strong upward trajectory.
Six of the state’s eight licensed sportsbooks reported higher revenue than in June, benefiting from the improved hold across the market.
World Cup Extended Seasonal Betting Demand
The 2026 FIFA World Cup provided an unusual boost to the US summer betting calendar, traditionally one of the industry’s quieter periods following the conclusion of the NFL, NBA and NHL seasons. With Major League Baseball typically serving as the primary betting product during the summer months, the World Cup introduced a high-volume international event that attracted additional wagering activity throughout July.
The tournament also contributed to stronger sportsbook margins. Results in three-way moneyline markets proved favourable for operators, with Spain’s victory over Argentina in the World Cup final cited as one of the outcomes that supported higher hold percentages across the market.
FanDuel and DraftKings Continue to Dominate
The competitive landscape remained largely unchanged, with DraftKings and FanDuel continuing to account for the majority of New York’s online betting activity.DraftKings generated the state’s highest betting handle for the second consecutive July, processing $661.5 million in wagers. An 11% hold translated into $72.9 million in gross gaming revenue.
FanDuel, meanwhile, delivered the market’s strongest financial performance despite handling slightly fewer bets. The operator accepted $651.2 million in wagers while achieving a 13.2% hold, producing $86.1 million in gross gaming revenue, nearly double its June total and comfortably ahead of DraftKings in monthly earnings.
Hold, Not Handle, Defined July’s Results
July serves as a reminder that sportsbook performance cannot be assessed through betting volume alone. While handle remains the industry’s most visible metric, operator profitability ultimately depends on how efficiently wagers are converted into revenue.New York’s latest figures demonstrate that even in a month of lower betting activity, stronger pricing outcomes and favourable sporting results can significantly enhance operator earnings. As the market approaches the return of the NFL season, sportsbooks will look to build on July’s margin recovery while maintaining the record levels of customer engagement seen throughout the year.
